Girevi: The Sensational Frontier Village of Wild Tusheti
Girevi is a captivating mountain outpost that stands as the absolute final village of the Pirikiti valley in Tusheti. Perched dramatically along the banks of a rushing glacial river, this remote frontier settlement is a landscape of ancient stone houses and towering medieval defensive ruins. Serving as the official gateway to the deepest wilderness of the high Caucasus, Girevi offers bold travelers an unmatched experience of raw nature, peaceful isolation, and untamed history.
The Frontier Spirit of Girevi
Located at the very end of the dirt road that winds through the Pirikiti valley, Girevi feels like the literal edge of civilization. The village is characterized by traditional Tush slate-stone architecture, beautifully adapted to the harsh mountain environment. Historically, Girevi acted as a crucial defensive shield for the entire region. Its tactical position allowed local warriors to monitor the high mountain passes and protect the inner valleys of Tusheti from external invasions, a heritage still visible in the weathered stone walls that dominate the landscape.
For modern adventurers, Girevi is a legendary name associated with epic multi-day trekking expeditions. It houses the official border police checkpoint where hikers must register before embarking on the iconic trek over the Atsunta Pass into the neighboring Khevsureti region. Surrounded by massive alpine ridges, roaring water streams, and endless fields of wildflowers, the village serves as the ultimate base to prepare your gear, hire local horses, and soak in the majestic silence of the Caucasus highlands before stepping into completely uninhabited terrain.

How to Visit Girevi & Practical Info
Planning a trip to the deep frontier of Tusheti requires specialized preparation. Here is what you need to know for a successful journey:
Getting There: Reaching Girevi is a true off-road challenge. After conquering the Abano Pass to Omalo, you must continue deep into the Pirikiti valley past Dartlo and Parsma. The road ends here, and a reliable high-clearance 4×4 vehicle with a skilled driver is mandatory.
Border Registration: If you plan to hike beyond the village toward the Atsunta Pass, you must carry your physical passport or ID card. You are required to stop at the local border guard station in Girevi to obtain a mandatory permit for the border zone.
Best Time to Visit: Due to the extreme altitude and winter snow blocks, Girevi is only accessible from mid-June to early September.
Services & Logistics: This is a remote outpost with minimal infrastructure. While there are a couple of basic, authentic seasonal guesthouses, you must ensure you have all your necessary tracking supplies, maps, and cash before leaving Omalo.
