Dartlo: The Incredible Fairy-Tale Stone Village of Tusheti
Dartlo is a stunning, fairy-tale stone village that stands as the architectural crown jewel of the entire Tusheti region. Cascading down the misty slopes of the Pirikiti valley, this ancient settlement is a living museum of medieval towers, hidden slate-roofed houses, and deep-rooted mountain traditions. Accessible only through rugged mountain passes, it offers travelers an unforgettable journey back in time, surrounded by the untamed grandeur of the high Caucasus peaks.
The Medieval Magic of Dartlo Village
Perched at an elevation of around 2,000 meters above sea level, Dartlo is famous for its unique and beautifully preserved vernacular architecture. Unlike many other mountain regions, the houses and defensive towers here are built entirely from local dark slate stone, held together by ancient masonry techniques. Walking through its narrow, winding stone alleys feels like stepping into a medieval fortress. The iconic Dartlo towers, which once protected local families from invaders, still stand tall against the backdrop of roaring glacial rivers and emerald-green alpine alpine pastures.
Dartlo is not just about breathtaking views; it is a place of immense historical and cultural significance for the Tush people. At the edge of the village, you can find the historic stone chairs of the ancient Tush court (Sabcheo), where village elders once gathered to debate laws and deliver judgments. Directly overlooking the main settlement is the historic fortress of Kvavlo, perched dramatically on a sharp cliff above. A short but steep hike up to Kvavlo reveals an even deeper layer of Tusheti’s fortified history and offers a sweeping bird’s-eye view of the entire valley below.

How to Visit Dartlo & Practical Info
Visiting this high-altitude fairy tale requires careful planning due to the remote nature of the Caucasus mountains. Here is what you need to know before your trip:
Getting There: To reach Dartlo, you must navigate the breathtaking and challenging road over the Abano Pass. Because the terrain is entirely off-road, a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle and an experienced mountain driver are absolutely mandatory for safety.
Accommodation & Food: Despite its remote location, Dartlo offers a few charming, family-run guesthouses built in traditional style. It is the perfect place to spend the night, listen to the river, and taste authentic mountain dishes like Tush Khinkali and local cheese.
Best Time to Visit: The village is accessible only from early June to late September. During the rest of the year, heavy snow locks the mountain passes, making the area completely unreachable.
Respect Sacred Sites: You will notice small stone shrines (Khati) around the village. These are sacred spaces according to ancient local beliefs. Women are strictly forbidden from approaching them, and pork products should never be brought into the region.
