4-Day Tusheti Wilderness: Horseback Adventure

Early morning departure from Tbilisi toward the wild, remote mountains of Tusheti. Our journey takes us through the scenic Gombori Pass into the Kakheti region, making a cultural stop at the majestic Alaverdi Cathedral. From there, the real adventure begins as we tackle the legendary Abano Pass (2,960 m), the highest drivable road in the Caucasus. Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by dramatic mountain views before arriving in Omalo by late afternoon. After checking into your guesthouse, enjoy a traditional dinner. (Note: Depending on timing and road conditions, a short introductory visit to the nearby medieval village of Dartlo may be arranged).

After a hearty mountain breakfast, begin your active exploration of Tusheti. Today, you will embark on a spectacular horseback riding adventure leading into the picturesque Chanchakhovani Gorge. The trail winds through dense pine forests and lush alpine meadows, bringing you to the historic villages of Shenako and Diklo, famous for their traditional stone houses and sweeping views near the Dagestan border. Enjoy a scenic picnic lunch in nature before riding back to Omalo for a relaxing evening.

Today stands as the high-altitude highlight of your expedition. Mount your horse for an epic ride up the breathtaking Unagira Mountain range (3,050 m). As you ride along the ridge, you will be rewarded with jaw-dropping, 360-degree panoramic views overlooking both the Pirikiti and Gometsari valleys, with the remote stone settlements of Bochorna and Dartlo visible in the distance. Enjoy an unforgettable picnic lunch at the summit before descending into the tranquil Gometsari Valley and returning to Omalo.

After breakfast, explore the iconic Keselo Defensive Towers, which stand proudly over Upper Omalo and hold centuries of history. If Dartlo was not visited on Day 1, we will head there this morning to marvel at its stunning slate-roofed fortress architecture. Time and weather permitting, we will also catch a view of the cliffside village of Dochu. After a final traditional lunch at the guesthouse, we begin our scenic descent across the Abano Pass, driving back to Tbilisi where your unforgettable mountain journey concludes.
