Standing dramatically on the turquoise shores of the Jinvali Reservoir along the historic Georgian Military Highway, Ananuri Fortress is one of Georgia’s most iconic feudal architectural landmarks. Dating primarily from the 16th and 17th centuries, this cliffside citadel served as the formidable seat and military stronghold of the powerful Dukes of Aragvi (Aragvis Eristavebi).

Guarding the vital mountain pass connecting the lowlands of Georgia to the high peaks of Kazbegi and the North Caucasus, Ananuri Fortress witnessed centuries of dramatic feudal rivalries. Today, with its well-preserved battlements, historic watchtowers, and intricately carved churches set against forested hills and azure waters, it offers travelers an unforgettable window into medieval Georgian defense and stone artistry.

History, Stone Carvings & Defensive Architecture of Ananuri

Unlike many ruined strongholds across the Caucasus, the upper citadel of Ananuri survives in remarkable condition:

• The Towering Upper Citadel & Sheupovari: The complex consists of two distinct defensive areas. The upper fortress is dominated by “Sheupovari” (The Intrepid), a massive multi-tiered square keep that formed the last line of resistance during medieval sieges. Wooden stairs allow curious travelers to climb through the defensive floors for sweeping panoramas of the gorge.

• The Splendid Church of the Assumption (1689): Commissioned by the son of Duke Bardzem, this domed church represents a pinnacle of late medieval Georgian stone masonry. Its southern facade displays a monumental carved grapevine cross framed by ornate bas-reliefs of lions, dragons, and celestial motifs.

• The Earlier Church of the Virgin: Built of brick in the first half of the 17th century, this older sanctuary holds historic burial vaults of the Aragvi dukes, including a carved stone canopy erected in 1674.

• The Sunken Heritage of Jinvali: The vast reservoir below did not always exist. Created by a Soviet dam in the 1980s, the emerald lake submerged ancient villages, leaving the fortress standing dramatically on a scenic peninsula.
