This ancient stronghold offers travelers a perfect blend of rich medieval history, light hiking, and breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over the Trialeti Range and the surrounding valleys, all just a short drive from Tbilisi.

A Brief Overview of Khoroghli Castle

Dating back to the 9th-10th centuries, Khoroghli Castle served as a crucial defensive shield for the historical city of Tbilisi. Strategically located along the caravan routes connecting the southern regions to the capital, it was historically known as Azeula Fortress. Due to its nearly inaccessible location on top of sharp, vertical cliffs, the citadel was incredibly difficult to capture, providing a secure refuge for Georgian monarchs, including King Vakhtang Gorgasali and Queen Tamar, during times of war.

Although many of the internal structures have fallen into ruins over the centuries, parts of the massive stone curtain walls, defensive towers, and a small chapel still stand proud against the elements. Today, a steep metal staircase allows modern explorers to safely climb to the very top of the highest tower. Once at the peak, you can experience a unique highland breeze and stand right where medieval sentinels once stood keeping watch over the Caucasus.
