Brief information about Tusheti

Tusheti is a historic region in Georgia. Moreover, it is the most fascinating and pristine high-mountain region. This part of Georgia is located in the Kakheti region, Akhmeta municipality (900-4800m above sea level). This area is under environmental protection as part of the Tusheti Protected Areas (1137 sq km). Plus, this region is on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list.

Administratively, Tusheti is a part of the municipality of Akhmeta. The largest village in Tusheti is Omalo. Tusheti is comprised of four mountain communities:

  • Tsova
  • Gometsari
  • Pirikiti
  • Chaghma

Tusheti is an area that preserves the spirit of the past. Here, time seems to stand still. The vast majority of inhabitants are shepherds. However, these people are friendship-minded and willing to talk to strangers; they like to absorb world news and share local culture.
