Welcome to an exploration of Khornabuji Fortress, a historical gem that carries the weight of centuries of Georgian history. This formidable fortress stands as a testament to the strategic significance it held in times of old, offering visitors a captivating journey into the past.
A Brief History of Khornabuji Fortress
Khornabuji Fortress, perched majestically on a steep rock in Dedoplistskaro, Georgia, holds within its stone walls a history that is both enigmatic and awe-inspiring. While the fortress is believed to have been established in the V century, its origins are shrouded in the mists of time, adding to its mystique.
In the late 5th or early 6th century, Khornabuji fell under the dominion of the Sasanians. During this period, the neighboring town suffered destruction, yet fragments of the castle endured. Subsequently, over the centuries, the town reemerged on the flat terrain to the south of the castle’s rock.
Moving forward to the 13th century, historical accounts present conflicting narratives. Some sources suggest that Queen Tamar played a role in the castle’s reconstruction. However, alternative perspectives propose that references to Queen Tamara’s involvement in castle construction may pertain to a different site.
According to one interpretation of historical records, the Khornabuji township faced devastation at the hands of Mongol invaders led by Berke Khan around 1264. Survivors of this upheaval relocated to Sighnaghi, and from that point onward, significant settlement outside the protective castle walls ceased.
Another viewpoint posits that during the 17th century, the settlement met its decline due to an invasion launched from Iran by Shāh Abbās. In the wake of these tumultuous events, the castle underwent reconstruction, under the reign of Heraclius II of Kartli-Kakheti. However, the surrounding township was not subject to rebuilding efforts.
Today, Khornabuji Fortress welcomes visitors from all corners of the world.
