Mtskheta-Mtianeti

Mtskheta-Mtianeti boasts a long and vibrant history that traces its roots to ancient times. Various tribes, including the Mtiuleti and Khevsureti peoples, inhabited the region. In the 4th century BC, the Kingdom of Iberia, one of the earliest states in the Caucasus region, gained control over the area.

Mtskheta, a key administrative center, served as the capital of the Kingdom of Iberia, maintaining its significance throughout Georgian history. As a pivotal political, cultural, and religious hub, Mtskheta witnessed the construction of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the 4th century AD. This cathedral, standing proudly today, holds immense importance as one of Georgia’s most significant religious monuments.

The annals of Mtskheta-Mtianeti’s history reveal periods of invasion and occupation by various foreign powers, including the Persian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and eventually, the Russian Empire, which annexed the region in the 19th century.

Following the Russian Revolution of 1917, Georgia declared independence, and Mtskheta-Mtianeti became an integral part of the newly formed Georgian Republic. Subsequently, the region underwent substantial economic and cultural development.
